Walk from the house

Beautiful walks, starting directly from Ardnoe House - (2) Crinan Wood Walk

view from hilltop (potential picnic spot)

The "Crinan Wood Walk" (3km) takes 1 – 2 hours for the circular route, allowing time for a picnic, maybe 3 hours with younger children.

Starting from our driveway, walk down the private road, and then turn left on to the public road, walking down the hill past the Crinan Hotel (5 minutes). We have generally preferred, especially with children, taking the walk in the opposite direction to that shown on the walk highlands plan, (in which case the numbers 1 and 2 above would be reversed) ie climbing up the hill first, and finishing with the easier walk back along the canal, when children are tired!

Once past the hotel and coffee shop, cross the little footbridge in front of the lighthouse. Look over to the right, near to Loch 14, you will see the start of the walk going up the hill.

There are beautiful views in alll directions from the top of the hill, making an ideal picnic spot.

Above: view looking north-west to the sound of Jura , and islands (Jura, Scarba and Mull).

descending the hill, views of Crinan Ferry Beach appear from beyond the trees

Returning to your starting point alongside the Crinan Canal.

After descending the last part of the hill you cross the canal and can look back at this picture perfect canal-side cottage

Crinan Ferry beach is visable, just a short stretch of water away across Loch Crinan, as you walk back along the side of the canal.

Duntrune Castle visible from the canal side.

Returning to base and the Crinan Canal basin starting point, the coffee shop is a welcome sight. A great incentive for tired children, that "if you walk quickly, we can get back to the coffee shop before it closes" !
