Local History and the Kilmartin Museum

The Kilmartin valley (15 minutes drive from us) is regarded as Scotland’s most important prehistoric landscape. There is an impressive collection of standing stones, stone circles, cairns and rock carvings to explore, dating from the Neolithic and early Bronze Age. The remains of Dunadd Fort, home of the ancient kings of Scotland, are also nearby.

The recently upgraded and refurbished Kilmartin museum provides a fascinating interpretation of the local history, includes hands on activities for children, and has a highly regarded café.

“How many museums can you go to where you can examine a Bronze Age pot and look out of the window and see the burial mound where it came from?”

— Sir Tony Robinson (Time Team)

Free volunteer-led Guided Glen Walks are available every Wednesday afternoon from April to October.

The organisers state "you will visit many of the amazing ancient sites in Kilmartin Glen, including the Linear Cairn Cemetery, Nether Largie South Chambered Cairn and Temple Wood Stone Circle. They are a fun and friendly way to discover what makes this landscape so special!  Each walk lasts between 2.5 and 3 hours".

Past guests have found these very enjoyable and informative, though have mentioned that the amount of detail means they are not really suitable for younger children.
